[Dec 14, 2025] Meetings in Ethiopia to Discuss Energy Cooperation and Capacity Building

On December 14, a Korea University GETPPP delegation—led by Professor Sungjin Kang and Professor Kyungnam Kim—conducted two meetings in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with energy-sector counterparts to exchange perspectives on Ethiopia’s energy transition and explore opportunities for future cooperation.

In the first meeting with the Petroleum and Energy Authority (PEA), discussions focused on power-sector challenges and near-term priorities. Ethiopian counterparts emphasized the need to reduce overreliance on hydropower by diversifying toward other renewables, while also stressing that a key bottleneck lies in strengthening electricity distribution to improve reliability.

Also, The GETPPP delegation introduced Korea University’s Green School and GETPPP programs and shared ideas for enhancing collaboration channels among government, industry, and alumni networks.

In the second meeting with Ethiopian energy experts, the dialogue moved to implementation-oriented agendas. Participants highlighted the importance of hydrogen–water linked projects, noting that water considerations are central to scaling green hydrogen. The meeting also discussed the potential to draw on K-water’s experience (including its prior work related to Ethiopia).

And they introduced Korea University’s Green School and GETPPP programs, with a view toward tailored capacity-building and training cooperation aligned with local needs.
As an outcome, the meetings helped establish a shared understanding of Ethiopia’s key transition priorities and identified promising directions for follow-up—particularly in distribution-focused dialogue, customized training cooperation, and project-linked collaboration frameworks. GETPPP will continue consultations with Ethiopian counterparts to refine concrete next steps and potential joint activities.
